Livingston County has long been known for its local food scene, taking full advantage of the region’s agricultural roots for farm-to-table fare that’s as fresh as it gets. Pair that with the county’s growing number of breweries and local watering holes, and LivCo leaves little for any visiting foodie to want.

That said, the area’s chefs and restaurateurs are hardly resting on their laurels. While LivCo may have a good thing going, there’s always room (and appetite) for even more eats and drinks. Over the last year, a handful of new dining and drinking options have popped up and more are in the pipeline, for something different and exciting to try every time you’re in town.

Simple Diner Food Done Right

At the Waystone Restaurant & Trading Post in Avon, owner and operator Chris Mastasio said, “We’re not trying to be fancy — just consistent, welcoming and fast. We opened to offer a comfortable spot where locals and travelers alike can grab a satisfying meal, enjoy friendly service, and feel at ease.”

The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch all day long, seven days a week. The menu includes classics like pancakes and French toast, breakfast platters, and eggs Benedict. If you’re having trouble deciding what to order, though, Mastasio recommends the corned beef hash (“it’s developed a bit of a cult following”) or biscuits and gravy. At lunchtime, the chopped cheese sandwich and Waystone smashburger are two can’t-miss picks.

“We host everything from birthday parties with hot dogs, burgers, and soft-serve ice cream to multi-course wine-pairing dinners with incredible chefs,” said Mastasio. “We’re also expanding our game nights — euchre tournaments, board game nights, and chess clubs for both kids and adults. At our core, we’re a family diner, but we’re also a space for the community to come together and connect.”

Convenience Meets High-Quality Cuisine

Back to Top of List

When owner Rodman Johnson noticed a growing demand for high-quality, quick-service meals that don’t compromise on flavor, he opened Refinery Kitchen. The restaurant brings exceptional taste and convenience to diners in an elevated, fast-casual environment.

“What makes us unique is our fusion of international flavors with an approachable gastropub. Imagine enjoying chef-crafted burgers and sandwiches that transcend the ordinary, alongside our versatile build-your-own options,” he said.

Johnson recommends trying the menu’s smash burgers, as well as the “fancy smancy” burger, which is topped with creamy brie, sauteed kale and garlic, and crispy pork belly. The Challenger sandwich is likewise popular, featuring crispy fish, tangy pickled onions, kimchi, cabbage slaw, and the restaurant’s signature house-made Korean barbecue sauce.

Then, there’s always the option to build-your-own bowl, arepa, or fold, picking and choosing from the restaurant’s various fresh ingredients and unique sauces.

Throughout the fall and winter, expect seasonal menu rotations featuring comforting and winter-ready ingredients like hearty grains, roasted root veggies, and warming spices, as well as holiday-themed burger and sandwich specials.

Creamery Meets Coffeehouse

Back to Top of List

In Nunda, Lulu's Coffeehouse is one of the few dining options in town that’s open later in the evenings, until 8 pm. Fuel your travels with specialty coffee and teas, including 12+ different styles of teas from Saratoga Tea & Honey. Try one of their fresh deli sandwiches or paninis, topped with locally sourced ingredients and your choice of rustic bread. Save room for one of the house-baked pastries, too!

Craving something sweeter? Since Lulu’s Coffeehouse and Kish-a-wa Creamery are in the same spot, visitors can order one of the creamery’s locally raised hamburgers, hot dogs, or fried bites, as well as more than 52 flavors of ice cream.

Menu favorites include the Italian and pizza paninis, made with freshly sliced deli meat, fresh mozzarella, and basil grown on-site, all piled high on ciabatta bread. A regional must-try from the pastry case? The authentic Amish fry pies, filled with seasonal produce.

Described as somewhere between grandma’s house and a speakeasy, settle in at a lounge area, and when the weather’s nice, a patio offers dining tables with umbrellas, surrounded by an herb, vegetable, and flower garden. Keep an eye out for fall harvest specials, including pie and pumpkin lattes.
